Chiranjibi Kharel
Chiranjibi Kharel, widely known as Marijuanist, or simply Mari, is a leading activist in Nepal’s cannabis legalization movement. He has played a significant role in advocating for the economic, medicinal, and cultural importance of cannabis and hemp in Nepal.
Activism and Advocacy
Kharel has been at the forefront of Nepal’s marijuana legalization efforts, organizing multiple flash mobs and demonstrations. One of his most notable actions was blocking the private convoy of the former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to draw attention to the cause. His relentless activism has led to multiple arrests, making him one of the most recognized figures in Nepal's cannabis movement.
Legalization Efforts
He has been actively involved in petitioning for the legalization of marijuana in Nepal, gathering support from both national and international stakeholders. Through his efforts, he has helped bring cannabis reform discussions into the political and social mainstream.
Innovation in Hemp Products
Beyond activism, Kharel is an entrepreneur and innovator. He was the first to introduce hemp milk and hemp soap in Nepal, contributing to the country's emerging hemp industry. His company, Kanehmaa, produces various hemp-based products, including hemp oil and hemp biscuits.
Current and Future Endeavors
Kharel continues to push for policy changes through lobbying efforts, business ventures, and awareness campaigns. He is working and collaborating with Vijaya Organic Research Center (VORC) to lobby Different Ministry of Nepal for hemp and cannabis culture.
